Special requirements are applied to suture materials in vascular surgery. An ideal suture must not be soaked with blood, must be highly inert when in contact with vascular tissues and fluids and capable of closing the wound tightly without narrowing the lumen. Preference is given to monolithic synthetic materials since they are least involved in the inflammatory process in the scar area.

Polypropylene fibers can be used even on infected tissues. Catgut dissolves slowly, leaving no obstacles to vascular growth at the healing site. Capron has an increased smoothness and can maintain strength without breaking down into fibers under any exposure (sterilization, immersion in blood, etc.).
